Research Approach

Artizan’s research has discovered how to identify and characterize microbial drivers of disease that reside in the gut epithelium and cause intestinal inflammation within a precise subset of susceptible people, laying the foundation for inflammatory disorders to occur.

Given certain genetics and environmental factors, some people are susceptible to organisms in the gut that can cause disease, while others are not. In patients susceptible to disease, exposure to these organisms (or “pathobionts”) induces intestinal dysbiosis and triggers an inflammatory cascade that leads to the development and progression of diverse chronic diseases and certain cancers. Through its research, Artizan identifies and targets these disease drivers to develop small molecule and biologic therapeutics to treat the diseases they cause.
